Shop Door Stops: Spring, Kick Down, Hinge Pin and Rigid Styles
Door stops are one of the most practical pieces of hardware in any home. A single door swinging freely into a wall can cause dents, cracked drywall, broken door handles, and damaged hinges over time. The right door stop prevents all of that with a simple, affordable fix.
Inside Out Hardware carries door stops from two trusted brands, Hardware House and Designers Impressions, across five distinct types to suit different door locations and needs.
Spring door stops are the most common type. They mount directly to the floor or baseboard and use a flexible metal spring to cushion the door before it reaches the wall. They are the go-to solution for most interior rooms and come in white, satin nickel, and oil rubbed bronze finishes.
Kick down door stops serve a dual purpose. They hold a door open in a fixed position when needed and release with a gentle kick. They are ideal for utility rooms, laundry areas, and any door you frequently need to prop open with your hands full.
Hinge pin door guard stops are a unique and space-saving option. They attach directly to the existing hinge pin of the door rather than mounting to the floor or wall, eliminating the need to drill any new holes. They work by limiting how far the door swings before a rubber tip makes contact with the door frame.
Rigid door stops provide a fixed, immovable stopping point and are best suited for heavy exterior doors where a flexible spring stop would not provide enough resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Door Stops
For wall protection, a floor-mounted spring door stop or a hinge pin door guard is usually the best choice because both stop the door before the handle reaches the wall. For floor protection in areas where you want to avoid drilling into tile or hardwood, a baseboard-mounted spring stop works well. Kick down stops are better suited for holding doors open rather than wall protection specifically.
A hinge pin door stop replaces the hinge pin on one of your existing door hinges with a slightly longer pin that has a rubber-tipped arm attached. When the door swings open past a certain point, the rubber tip makes contact with the door frame or wall and stops the door from swinging further. Because it attaches to the hinge itself, no floor or wall drilling is required, making it one of the easiest door stop options to install in any room.
For heavy exterior doors, a rigid or solid cast door stop mounted securely to the floor provides the most resistance. Heavy doors generate significantly more force than interior doors when they swing open, and a standard spring stop may compress too far to prevent wall contact. A floor-mounted rigid stop anchored with proper screws into the subfloor gives a fixed stopping point that can withstand the weight and momentum of a solid wood or steel exterior door.
